Ouray High School students use Black Canyon Jet Center as a base for first flights

On May 9th 2012, seven students from Ouray High School spent the day at Black Canyon Jet Center to take their first flight for their college-accredited flight training course. This is the first year this course has been offered as high school credit, and so far a big hit amongst the students.

Black Canyon Jet Center had a great day hosting the Ouray students. It was great to see our future aviators taking their first flight. To read a full article about the students day of flying, follow the link below.

Montrose High School Career Options Intern Completes her Semester at BCJC

Kate Adams, Junior at the Montrose High School, with her final showcase board detailing her work at Black Canyon Jet Center.

Kate Adams has been a Montrose High School COS intern with Black Canyon Jet Center since the beginning of February 2012. She started with us as just having a general love for aviation and flying but not knowing a lot about general or commercial aviation and fixed based operations. She has now grown to having knowledge about the aviation industry, FBO’s and the processes to run the business day by day. Kate has a true enthusiasm for learning and her career ahead.

Kate has been a pleasure for all of the staff at Black Canyon Jet Center to work with. We are excited for her future and hope we will get to work with her again next year.

Montrose Civil Air Patrol Squadron 141 honors Black Canyon Jet Center

The Montrose Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Composite Squadron 141 honored Black Canyon Jet Center with a plaque expressing thanks for six years of local program support. The Montrose squadron provides many community services including search and rescue, disaster relief, humanitarian services, aviation education and cadet programs.

Civil Air Patrol was founded in the late 1930s when more than 150,000 aviation enthusiasts argued for an organization that would put their flying experience to use in defense of our country. As a result, the Civil Air Patrol was formed just one week prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor; thousands of volunteers joined together to support World War II efforts. After the war, the Civil Air Patrol was incorporated as a nonprofit organization with three primary missions: aerospace education, cadet programs and emergency services. Since then, the CAP organization has continued to provide valuable services on the national and local levels.

“Black Canyon Jet Center will continue to support the Montrose Civil Air Patrol Squadron and its local efforts,” said Ken Watson, director of operations at Black Canyon Jet Center . “They are a fantastic organization with a long-running tradition in Montrose and the surrounding areas and are vital part of our local aviation community.”

Black Canyon Jet Center has supported the Montrose CAP program and its efforts by:

• hosting cadet program activities, training and exercise facilities

• providing hangar space to support active search and rescue missions during cold weather and

• a meeting location for the senior members once a month, all at no charge

“The staff and owner of Black Canyon Jet Center have always been extremely courteous and supportive helping us to fulfill our search-and-rescue and cadet-related services to the community,” said First Lieutenant Ron Forsberg. “They have provided this support since opening more than six years ago. We wanted to present this plaque as a small token of our appreciation. It would be much more difficult for us to provide our services without their gracious help.”

USA Pro Cycling Challenge Comes to Montrose

August 20-26th 2012, the US Pro Cycling will be coming to Colorado. Montrose is proud to be a host city this year being the start of Stage 2 on August 21st with Crested Butte as the ending for that stage. In 2011, this race brought in 135 of the worlds top cycling athletes including Olympians, World Champions and Tour de France winners, racing 518 miles through the Rocky Mountains. This event has been considered “the most challenging race to ever be held on American soil.” We are excited because this also brought in nearly 1 million spectators for the 2011 race.

We are excited to see what the 2012 race will bring to Colorado and the Montrose area. Check out the You Tube link below to see all of the details for 2012 Challenge.

CABA Encourages Holiday Giving in 1st Annual Charity Drive

The Colorado Aviation Business Association (CABA) is proud to announce the first annual Holiday Charity Drive to benefit the State of Colorado’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). The association is collecting toys and nonperishable foods to aid veteran families throughout the state. Collection efforts began mid‐October with donation boxes placed in various airport and business locations statewide as notated below. Although collections will end on Nov 30th, food and toys donations will continue at the first annual CABA Holiday party on December 2nd, 2011. Limited registration is open to all members of the Colorado aviation industry and attendees are asked to bring $20 worth of charitable items in lieu of purchasing a ticket.

As part of the effort CABA has also teamed up with the Metropolitan State College of Denver’s (MSCD) Aviation Department’s Flight Team. On Dec 4th, 2011 students of the MSCD program will fly the donations to three locations across the state. These students have donated their time and money for aircraft rentals. Ensuring timely delivery before the holiday season, the pilots will fly the food and toy donations to Montrose located on the western slope of the state. Other locations include Trinidad in southern Colorado and finally Burlington on the eastern plains. Members of the Colorado’s Veterans of Foreign Wars will greet the 13 aircraft at each location and help distribute the food and toys to those in need in the local area.
